Royal Canin is highly recommended by many pet owners and dogs love it. It has a lot of vitamins and minerals. It does not contain any of the various preservatives and additives for color and texture that are in many pet foods.
Royal Canin has had recalls, but not since 2007. Those recalls were about the use of chicken by-products.
A 2013 publication by Royal Canin confirmed rumors that they were replacing ingredients such as chicken meal with chicken by-products. But their website in 2016 still lists chicken meal as the second ingredient.
There are many opinions on meat “by-products” in pet food. Just because you think they are gross doesn’t mean they are bad. But it would be nice to know if this ingredient is chicken meal or chicken by-product.
The next ingredient, chicken fat, is probably okay. The only thing worse there would be some mystery “rendered fat.”
The next two ingredients are corn and corn. So the only actual meat in the first five ingredients is chicken meal, and that might be chicken by-product.
Brewer’s rice is the first ingredient. Also known as broken rice, it is an easily digested carbohydrate that contains fiber, and fiber is important in a dog’s diet. Brewer’s rice is sold exclusively for pet food and dairy feed.
This bulky fiber will fill your dog up without harming him. It is found in some premium dog foods and almost all grocery grade dog foods.
However, the key to your dog’s health in regards to brewer’s rice is where it is located on the ingredients list.
Most premium foods use ground rice as the third or fourth ingredient but brewer’s rice shouldn’t really be that high up on the list. The more brewers’ rice, the more carbohydrates.
Some of the rest of ingredients are vegetable oil, potassium chloride and some vitamins complex.
